A bedside lamp seems like the simplest purchase in the world, until it arrives and the bulb shines directly into your eyes when you sit up to read. Or it’s so short the light only reaches your pillow.

Getting it right comes down to three things: height, shade, and bulb.

1. Height: the rule that saves most mistakes

Sit up in bed the way you normally read. The bottom of the lampshade should be roughly at your chin or shoulder level. That way the light falls onto your book, but you never see the bare bulb.

A handy shortcut: your nightstand height plus your lamp height should land somewhere around 58 to 70 cm (23 to 28 inches) above the top of your mattress. Higher beds and taller headboards need taller lamps.

Also check scale. As a rough guide, the lamp shouldn’t be much taller than the nightstand is high, and the shade shouldn’t be wider than the nightstand top.

2. The shade: where the mood comes from

  • Fabric or linen shades spread soft, warm light to the side. Best for a cozy look.
  • Paper or rice-paper shades glow beautifully and feel very calm.
  • Opaque metal shades push light down in a focused pool. Great for reading, less ambient glow.
  • Glass globes look elegant but can be glary unless you use a frosted or low-wattage bulb.

If you share the bed and one person reads while the other sleeps, a shade that directs light downward (or a lamp with an adjustable arm) keeps the light on your side.

3. The bulb

Go for a warm 2700K LED bulb. Around 400 to 450 lumens (the “40-watt equivalent”) is enough for reading in bed without being harsh. If you like reading late, a dimmable bulb plus a dimmable lamp is the dream combo.

Features worth paying a little more for

Feature Why it matters
Touch or 3-way dimming Tap for low, medium, bright. No fumbling for a tiny switch in the dark.
Built-in USB ports Charge your phone without a separate adapter cluttering the nightstand.
Weighted base Survives being knocked by a sleepy hand.
Switch on the cord or base Make sure you can reach it from bed without stretching.

Touch-dimmable lamps with USB ports have become popular for exactly this reason: they solve three nightstand annoyances in one.

πŸ‘ Pros

  • Correct height means no glare
  • Fabric shades give cozy ambient light
  • Touch dimming is great at night

πŸ‘Ž Cons

  • Very tall lamps can overpower a small nightstand
  • Glass shades can be glary

Matching a pair

Using two lamps on either side of the bed? They don’t have to be identical, but they should be close in height and use the same bulb color. That keeps the room looking balanced and calm.

Quick checklist

  • Shade bottom at chin/shoulder height when sitting up
  • Fabric or paper shade for a cozy glow
  • Warm 2700K bulb, 400–450 lumens
  • Switch you can reach lying down

Get those four right and you’ll have a lamp you love using every single night.
